Being the best man is many things, but one thing it isn’t. It isn’t cheap. You will mostly probably need a new suit or at least some other part of the apparel. You are also going to have to spend quite a bit on the gift for the new couple. There are also myriad little expenses that add up and that can leave the best of best men destitute before you can say “overpriced ties”.
The good news, or at least the semblance of good news, is that a smart and resourceful future best man can do a few things to try to pad his pockets a bit before the big day comes. Now, keep in mind that many of these are quite risky and that this article is envisioned more as having a laugh than actually offering actionable and realistic advice. Not that there isn’t a bit of that sprinkled around as well.
Visit your Local Bookmaker
First of all, this is advice that will work only for those future best men who have the “fortune” of living in a country where betting is legal, like in the UK, for example. Now, most bookmakers are sad, dreary places filled with sorry excuses for grown up people (vast majority of which are men, probably because women are smarter than that) but there is no denying the fact that you can sometimes make some money betting.
We are in no way condoning betting as a way of making a living or even making money on the side, but we have to be realistic and acknowledge the fact that a well-timed and well-placed bet might put some money in your pocket.
It would probably help if you had a cousin playing in some low, low, low division where matches are still regularly fixed.
Selling your Fluids
Ah, the staple of every sitcom that lasts for more than two series and features more than one male character – selling one’s fluids. Depending on where you live, you will have a number of options if you decide to literally sell some of you off. Depending on what you choose to “donate”, you will have to exert some energy too. The money is nothing spectacular, but get into it on time and you might make just the money you need for the wedding.
If you are lucky enough, you might also find out that they are doing drug tests in your area and that they are looking for volunteers who wouldn’t mind putting their health on-line for a few bobs. Of course, you are always risking being “that best man who was blue, couldn’t open his left eye and was constantly having seizures “, but that is the price you have to pay.
Become a Day Trader
Day trading is an “official” term for playing certain financial markets that are far more volatile than the regular stock market and where you can make a quick buck even if your initial investment is somewhat limited. There are quite a few options for you here, from Forex trading (which is a mystery for even the most experienced of traders) to binary options (which are pretty much the same as gambling).
There are, however, penny stocks, i.e. stocks that are issued by smaller companies and those who have found themselves in financial troubles lately. Most of them are not worth your attention or money, but some of them might be on the rise and you might be earning quite a bit by purchasing them at the right time. Do Some Actual Work
If these “spectacular” money-making ideas do not work, you might have to resort to actually working for that extra money, picking up a shift at the local pub, doing a bit of construction work or freelancing online a few nights. Not all of us have the time and the strength to put in all the extra work, but sometimes you simply have to get off your behind and sweat.
This one is the last resort-type idea.
